Military Snowmobile - The Canadian military has always had the need to operate in extreme cold conditions across Canada, including the Arctic. Navigating this unforgiving and demanding environment is very difficult. For years, the military has used a variety of snowmobiles, mostly based on commercial technology.
At DEW, we took on the challenge of improving winter mobility and created a new generation of military snow gear for winter and arctic operations.
Military Snowmobile
With input from the Army and Defense Research and Development Canada, our engineers designed and built a high-performance, high-performance diesel snowmobile capable of handling long-range military missions. Known as the D900, our snowmobile has a large load and towing capacity. Its compression ignition engine is designed for NATO common gas resulting in great fuel economy. The D900 is no ordinary snowmobile!

The D900 offers a range of over 500 km on a single tank of fuel. It was purposely designed for military and police use and is suitable for long range patrol needs across Canada and across the North.
The D900 line of drives and accessories are standard off-the-shelf components, selected for their availability, durability and performance, providing long-term durability and support. Maintenance is facilitated by easy access to the system and components.
The D900 is powered by the world's first class single-cylinder engine. These features of the D900 have the potential to change the way the Canadian Army and Rangers conduct their operations and enable operations and patrols in arctic terrain.
In 2015, the Army received the first 2000 snowmobile models for the Canadian Army and Rangers for use in testing and evaluation at locations as far north as Cambridge Bay and Resolute, Nunavut. In addition, Defense Research and Development Canada has successfully tested the D900 in the Arctic on some of the new utility vehicles available for Canada's Arctic operations.

As the needs of Arctic operations continue to grow, our team at DEW continues to grow to provide new options to Soldiers around the world. BRP Finland Oy will deliver 100 special snowmobiles for many of its special projects.
The contract, including associated equipment, is worth 80 million Swedish kroner (about $9.1 million), including options for another 200 units.
The snowmobiles will be delivered to the 32nd Reconnaissance Battalion, the Ranger Battalion and the Parachute Squadron of the Swedish Army. All three are Swedish Army specialists responsible for tasks ranging from long-range reconnaissance and direct fire control to sabotage operations behind enemy lines.
According to the Ministry of Defense announcement, there are two types of vehicles. One is the 600cc Lynx BoonDocker Army 4100 850 E-TEC, which offers great mobility in mountainous areas, and the other is the more powerful Lynx 69 Ranger Army 900 ACE, which will be used as a snowmobile.
